i don't get it.... the 4th step is still 2D to me, but from the 5th on i only see a pool with a dolphin and penguins.....

Judging by the smoothness of it, I'm going to guess paint. Plus, he drew on a canvas, so I'd also guess paint because chalk doesn't work well with canvas I don't think.

its a soft pastel. Soft pastel can easily adapt the canvass textures. and he maybe use some techniques so thats why the textures are smooth. And as you can see, at the 4th picture.. his materials are pastels :)
